Energy funding, grants, and loans are everywhere, making it harder for you to know which funding you are eligible for.
In 2024, there is a handful of energy grants, loans and funding available to the public depending on their circumstances (income, occupancy, house type, to name a few).
Amongst government grants available, is The Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS), introduced in March 2023 and available to Scottish homeowners.
In this article, we are going to explore what the GBIS scheme is, run through the GBIS scheme eligibility criteria, and give you access to our FREE eligibility calculator.

What is GBIS?
GBIS stands for the Great British Insulation Scheme.
This scheme was previously known as ECO+, and is a government funding initiative aimed at improving the energy efficiency of homes across Great Britain, by the ambitious target of March 2026.
The plan is that GBIS will work alongside other funding programs, to allow low-income households to improve their energy efficiency by upgrading their insulation, with GBIS subsidising the cost.
It is worth noting that GBIS is not available in Northern Ireland but there are other energy saving schemes available to residents there.
Am I eligible for GBIS?
According to the government’s website, you could be eligible for GBIS support if:
- Your home has an EPC (energy performance certificate) rating of D though to G. In Scotland, you are legally required to display the EPC somewhere in your property, it can usually be found in the meter cupboard or next to the boiler. If not, you can check your EPC here or contact a trusted green energy installer, such as Green Home Systems, to conduct an energy assessment for you.
- Your home is in the following Council Tax bands:
Scotland | England | Wales |
---|---|---|
A - E | A - D | A - E |
You can also check your council tax band here if you are unsure. You may need to have some additional information to hand as well when checking your GBIS scheme eligibility, including:
- The total income for your household
- Any benefits that anyone living in your property receives (you may be eligible for additional support)
- Your email address or phone number so you can be contacted.
What is covered by GBIS?
GBIS is a fund that is focused on insulation. Different types of insulation are available, including:
Insulation Type | Overview |
---|---|
Cavity wall insulation | Fills the air gap between your brick walls to keep heat in. |
Solid wall insulation (internal or external) | Attaches directly to a solid wall, either inside or outside your home, to improve insulation. |
Loft insulation | Adds insulation to your attic or loft space to prevent heat loss through the roof. |
Flat or pitched roof insulation | Installed within a flat or angled roof structure to stop heat from escaping. |
Underfloor insulation | Insulates the floor from below, preventing heat loss to cooler ground. |
Solid floor insulation | Attaches insulation directly to a solid concrete floor to improve warmth. |
Park home insulation | Specifically designed insulation solutions for prefabricated homes. |
Room-in-roof insulation | Creates a heated living space within a converted loft area. |
